In November, the Winnipeg Jets and the Province of Manitoba introduced a new Winnipeg Jets specialty license plates. Manitoba Public Insurance will begin offering the Winnipeg Jets specialty license plates on December 12, 2011 through all of our Horizon Insurance and Ryan Gateway office locations. The cost of each set of plates is $70, including GST. There will be no limit on the number of plates available and customers will be able to purchase one per vehicle.
Horizon Insurance is moving into an exciting new phase effective October 3, 2011. As of that date, we will be acquired by HUB International, a leading North American insurance brokerage firm.
The Prairies had an unusual amount of hail this summer. Though, really, any amount of summer hail at all should be a pretty remarkable phenomenon. Myriad jagged orbs careening at us from the heavens is not something that we should have to expect while sipping lemonade in a hammock, but we prairie-folk are a hardy breed who can apparently get used to anything - even apocalyptic ice blizzards in August.
Are you a dentist, doctor, engineer, lawyer or other professional that has purchased disability insurance through an association plan? If so, it’s good to know you have disability insurance – along with life insurance, likely the most important coverage you should have. There are some short comings to many association plans that maybe of some interest.
As must as we don’t like to admit it, the summer is going to eventually end. For some people, this means returning to a school which may not be in Manitoba. If you are planning on taking your vehicle with you, it is important that you review MPI’s requirements for Manitobans who are temporarily living out of the province.
If you own a business, you know how important business or commercial insurance is. But one area you may not know about is Business Interruption coverage; the loss of income that will be incurred if a major loss occurs.
In business, a loss can be caused by many things such as fire, smoke, water, etc. Basic commercial insurance provides coverage for the direct damage to the building and contents but does not provide for the indirect costs that Business Interruption insurance would cover.
The Office of Consumer Affairs, Industry Canada wrote a
lengthy report in 2009 titled “Creditor Insurance, Are Consumers Being Well
Served?” The report looks into a number
of types of creditor insurance from credit cards, personal loans, mortgages and
lines of credit among others as well as who offers this coverage including
banks, credit unions, retail organizations, automobile dealers, and the list
goes on. Our blog post won’t get into
the details of the benefits of personally held insurance offered by brokers
In response to
customer concerns, Manitoba Public Insurance is proposing to pay an additional
premium rebate, and will soon submit an application to the Public Utilities
Board.
The current rebate rules
only allowed Manitoba Public Insurance to rebate premium for policies that were
renewed between March 1, 2009 and February 28, 2010 or for any new policies
that started between those dates. These rules did not consider premiums paid
from March 1, 2009 to February 28, 2010 if the start of the policy was outside
of that window.
May 29, 2010 has gone down in infamy here at the Horizon Claims Department. Due to a fast melt and several poorly-timed rains, it was on that day that hundreds, likely thousands, of Manitoba basements flooded simultaneously. Sometimes we in the Claims Department snap awake from a restless sleep with the evil date still on the lips. May Twenty Ninth Two Thousand and Ten.
