As must as we don’t like to admit it, the summer is going to eventually end. For some people, this means returning to a school which may not be in Manitoba. If you are planning on taking your vehicle with you, it is important that you review MPI’s requirements for Manitobans who are temporarily living out of the province.
First thing to remember is that registration and insurance requirements are not the same for all jurisdictions. In some locations, registering in the new location is required after 30, 60 or 90 days from the time that the customer takes up residency there. In other cases, the vehicle must be registered immediately if the customer is working in the new jurisdiction, or operating the vehicle for commercial purposes. Rules for students also differ by jurisdiction.
Before moving out of Manitoba either permanently or temporarily, a customer should contact the driver and vehicle licensing authorities in the other jurisdiction, to see when it is necessary to obtain a new driver's licence, and new vehicle registration and insurance.
If the customer is moving to another province or to the United States, the customer's Autopac coverage remains in force until:
• The customer is required to register in the other jurisdiction;
• The coverage is lapsed, cancelled, suspended or revoked; or
• The customer registers the vehicle in the other jurisdiction.
While driving in other jurisdictions, the customer must obey the laws of those jurisdictions. The laws in other jurisdictions may entitle a third party to sue for injuries or property damage. Even though the customer has Autopac coverage (All Perils, Third Party Liability, and Personal Injury Protection Plan), the customer's Third Party Liability coverage may not be sufficient if the customer is sued. The customer should purchase sufficient Third Party Liability coverage before leaving Manitoba.
In addition, the Personal Injury Protection Plan coverage only applies if the customer is an occupant of a Manitoba-plated vehicle at the time of the accident.
